Wide awake, unable to follow you into sleep,
I push aside the covers, go into the other room
to write you another poem.
This is our last night together for some time.
I should be lying beside you –
your unique warmth, your sweat,
the soft lull of your skin and breath
enough to still my mind.
But I know the words will be forgotten
by morning, while all of what delights me in you
will remain vibrant,
reverberating within me.
