There is a hollow tree
along the Huron’s bank
open to the river side
& large enough to hold two.
Names over names carved into bark
An open ledger of local loves & infatuations.
On a warm fall day we do not stay long
hunched on uncomfortable shoes.
We watch the sun across the bank
mistaking, at first, its speckles
for fall's first yellowed leaves.
Sitting within it’s burl at dusk
is a lyrical pleasure,
a marriage of shelter and weather
rain mottles surface ripples;
the rings swept away
with the water skippers.
